Renovation of the ancient School of the Cadets (Ecole des Cadets), originally a barracks, into the fourth European School. The intervention involved the renovation of nine ancient buildings, dated back to the end of the 19th century, and the construction of six new school buildings.

The Brussels Region already had 3 schools specifically intended for the children of agents employed in the various European institutions of the capital. With the recent broadening of the European Community to 28 Member States, these schools needed to welcome more than 10,000 students by the year 2010. Hence, the Belgian government, acting through the Building Authority (Régie des Bâtiments), decided to build a fourth European School on the site of the old School of the Cadets in the municipality of Laeken, in the district of the Palais Royal. The Building Authority commissioned the realization of the project to the consortium “4 à 4”, directed by ARCHI 2000, which included the architectural firms Conix Architects, Atelier du Sart Tilman and Duijsens Meyer Viol, with the Marcq & Roba research department, as design architects. The school, consisting of kindergarten, primary and secondary school welcomes from 2,500 to 3,000 students. The main challenge was to integrate a resolutely contemporary architecture into a set of existing buildings organised around a main courtyard, typical of the urban military architecture of the early 20th century. The project develops a gross surface area of more than 57.000 m², on a site measuring nearly 5 hectares.
